MAN WHO SAVED THE WORLD, THE
In 1983 the world was at the brink of war. One September night the Russian alarms went off alerting that US missiles were approaching. One man followed his gut feeling and acted against orders. He saved the world from a devastating nuclear holocaust.
The Man Who Saved the World tells the amazing story of Lt. Colonel Stanislav E. Petrov, formerly of the Soviet Army. A man who held the fate of the world in his hands for a few crucial minutes in history on the night of September 26, 1983.
When an alarm went off saying that five American Nuclear missiles had been launched against Russia, he followed his gut-feeling and went against orders by not confirming the threat – hereby saving the world from a nuclear holocaust.
22 years later this forgotten hero goes on a spectacular journey to the United States, where he is finally acknowledged for his historical deed and meets the Americans who were once his enemies – among them: Walter Cronkite, Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, David Hoffmann, Kevin Sanders and Kevin Costner.
The documentary has prominent American and Russian experts put the cold war in a modern perspective. They tell us how the possible mass destruction by nuclear weapons is more than a scary tale of the past. It’s a highly present threat in the world of today.
”It could have gone very badly. Soviet missiles would have destroyed Britain entirely; at least half of Germany and France, and America would have lost maybe 30 percent of its cities.”
Oleg A. Gordievsky, Soviet KBG officer
