GODLESS IN AMERICA
“I don’t know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is One Nation under God.” George W. Bush
Godless in America will weave together two main strands: the story of Madalyn Murray O’Hair’s notorious life and mysterious death, alongside an account of the current campaigns and struggles of American Atheists.
Stylistically, the film will move between contemporary observation of atheist activities, and an archive-rich narrative of the O’Hair story. The strands will share witness testimonies from veteran and younger atheists.
At a time where the World’s most powerful leader declares that he is inspired and directed by his Christian God, and begins each day by leading his cabinet in prayer, we propose a film about Atheism in America. As a US General speaks of “a Christian nation fighting a Holy War on Islamic terror,” the Atheist campaign to take God out of America defines a gathering battleground of the new millennium.
Godless in America will follow the ongoing struggles of American Atheists to be heard, and to take their case to politicians in Washington and to people across America. They claim that the despite the clamour of the Christian conservatives, there are 30 million non-believers in America, and they are determined to fight back against what they see as the current power of religious fundamentalism in every area of public life.
