SUBMARINE IN THE TRAWL
On July 19th 1984 the Norwegian fishing boat “Bentin” managed something that neither Norwegian nor Swedish navy vessels had ever managed: To force a Soviet submarine to surface!
20 years after the two captains meet for the first time after a drama that might have killed them both.
This documentary re-enacts what happened outside Utsira, Norway: A Soviet submarine of the Whiskey-class got caught in the fishing boat “Bentin”s trawl. For close to three hours the two captains fought a tremendous battle in order to escape. None of them was willing to give up. In a dramatic turn of events, the Norwegian fishing boat suddenly found itself directly involved in the Cold War. The relationship between the East and the West was tense and neither side trusted each other.
A decade has passed since the end of the Cold War facilitating the meeting of two sailors, back then defined as enemies by the ideologies of their countries. Today the two men can meet face to face – and call each other “friend”.
