IN GANDHI'S FOOTSTEPS

A small woman – but with a billion people on her shoulders. She is compared to both Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi – but Kiran Bedi is a reformer in police uniform.

IN GANDHI'S FOOTSTEPS

Kiran Bedi has gone into the most dangerous and violent parts of Indian society – and found non-violent solutions. Tens of thousand police officers – earlier feared for their violence – are turned into a welfare police. Bedi also transformed one of the largest prisons in the world – Tihar Central Jail – from a hell hole to a reformatory. She has found tools and treatment to create a better future for prisoners, drug-addicts and the poor in the slums.
But Bedi did not rise to fame easily. She has fought through fierce opposition and dared to bring her humanitarian and democratic ideas into the Indian society – in spite of all her critics.
Kiran Bedi was recently voted India’s most respected woman, and a role model for one sixth of the world’s population.
She is now leading the civilian police forces in the UN, in peacekeeping operations worldwide.
